MSIS 617 Management of the Supply Chain

MSIS 617 Management of the Supply Chain
Spring Term Th 5:30 – 8:15 PM

 Instructor:  Michael Miller, PhD
http://www.umb.edu/michael_miller/

This course counts as an elective and also satisfies one of the requirements for a Supply Chain Services Management specialization.  The topics covered by this course provide an important skill set relevant to managers in any field.

Supply chain management is a critical factor in operational excellence and a source of competitive advantage for a wide variety of organizations.  In manufacturing raw materials are sourced globally, production can take place anywhere in the world and the supply chain manager has to coordinate and direct these activities to insure a quality product is provided to the consumer at the lowest cost.  A restaurant might purchase ingredients from local farms or from anywhere in the country or internationally and then also has to insure expeditious delivery to maintain freshness.  Disaster relief efforts can involve supplying large quantities of fresh water, food and temporary shelter quickly and with little advance warning and in an environment where the local infrastructure may well be severely damaged.  In each of these examples, and in many more, knowledge of the principles of supply chain management is an absolute necessity.

MSIS 617 covers supply chain operating practices and principles with a concentration on the managerial and analytical methods necessary for control of a dynamic materials and logistics management system.   Specific topics covered include sourcing, both domestic and global, supply chain drivers and metrics, forecasting, inventory demand and control and the use and development of technology within the supply chain.  Examples from both manufacturing and services are illustrated through classroom discussion, cases and a dynamic supply chain game simulation.

Students needing assistance with registration should complete the registration request form.
