Summer course: MBAMS 600 Mathematical Analysis for Managers

MBAMS 600 Mathematical Analysis for Managers

Summer 2013

Tu/Th 6:00-9:00pm

This course provides the mathematical skills and applications to support graduate study in the College of Management. One of the learning objectives of the graduate program is to “apply critical thinking and analytical competence to complex business problems” and this course is specifically designed to address that goal. This interactive and cooperatively focused course is designed for students with an interest in management whose mathematical background is rusty or incomplete or is just in need of a little bolstering.

As a managerially focused course, emphasis will be placed on how mathematical techniques are used to support and improve decision making. The course will use Excel and will explicitly address communication about quantitative material and critical thinking skills. Examples will be drawn from a variety of functional areas. A grasp of math and quantitative methods is essential for success in both future courses and many careers in business, and this course provides the background necessary for achieving this success.

Fall course: MSIS612 IT Controls and Auditing

MSIS612 IT Controls and Auditing
Fall 2013
Th 5:30-8:15pm

An introduction from Professor Daniel Lee

Hello, everyone! I want to introduce my MSIS612 IT Controls and Auditing course which will be offered in coming Fall semester (Thursday 5:30PM). This course is designed to learn and experience latest principles and practices of information technology (IT) controls and audit. The topics of internal control over IT-relevant business resources and processes (which mean almost everything!) are achieving more and more attention due to today’s growing business uncertainties, e.g., technology evolution, internal fraud, cyber-attack, natural disaster, etc. So, the career development in this area (e.g., internal auditor, IT auditor, chief information officer, chief technical officer, etc.) is getting more promising (in terms of both available positions and their higher payment scheme).

Basically, this is not a technical course, but will cover the control frameworks for IT management and the management of the IT-relevant audit functions within a firm. Therefore, neither the technical nor accounting experience is necessary to take this course. Practical applications of the learning from this course will include taking the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) or Certified in the Governance of Enterprise IT (CGEIT) exams in the future. Until now, multiple students in my past classes could successfully pass the CISA exam based on their learning through the course and are enjoying their career. I am so excited to invite you to my class and help you start your career development in the emerging and growing areas of IT control and auditing! Please find an interesting article regarding this career path:

MBAMKT 672 Services Marketing: What Actions Will Succeed, and Why?

MBAMKT 672 Services Marketing:

Services represent about 80% of the country’s GDP.  No matter where you work, it is very likely that your job and the success of your employer depend on the services provided.  Major manufacturing companies such as IBM and GE have been transforming themselves into service organizations.  While traditional marketing concepts apply to services, Services Marketing, MBAMKT 672, is also concerned with the people, processes and physical evidence.  The approach of the course is pragmatic — what actions will succeed, and why?

New MBA Elective: CONRES 636 – Conflict in Workgroups

CONRES  636 – Conflict in Workgroups
Mo 4:15PM – 6:45PM
W01-0009 (Wheatley W01-0009)
Eben Weitzman
09/03/2013 – 12/13/2013

Our MBA students will now have the opportunity to have this course, offered through the Conflict Resolution department, count as an elective toward their MBA requirements. Interested students should contact Roni Lipton, the Associate Director for Dispute Resolution ( roni.lipton@umb.edu ) for approval.

Conflict in organizations, both within and between workgroups, can be a critical drain on resources, and/or a major source of growth.

This course provides the participant with an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the dynamics of work groups, with an emphasis on processes of conflict within them, and to develop skills to deal constructively with intra- and inter-group conflict.

The problem is approached in both didactic and experiential modes. During the Monday night class sessions we will grapple with conceptual issues, drawing from various literatures on groups. These sessions will consist of a combination of lecture and seminar-discussion format.

Students will also participate in weekly meetings with a small workgroup, consisting of a sub-set of the class, which will offer an opportunity to study group processes in vivo with the aid of a consultant. Each group’s consultant will be available for one and a half hours each week for that group. The workgroups will have a variety of tasks, or projects, with different types of product expected, over the course of the semester.

Staring Monday April 1, the enrollment period will open for Summer I, Summer II and the Fall. We have previously posted instructions on how to do an independent study, or take a class off-campus. Those instructions are posted at http://blogs.umb.edu/gradcm/2013/03/14/independent-studies-taking-courses-off-campus/.

Please also note the following:

Individual Enrollment Period

Each student will have their own enrollment start date, which is based on the number of credits completed, which will start during the week of April 1st. Those with a greater number of credits will have an enrollment start date earlier in the week, and those who have completed fewer credits will be assigned to later in the week. You can view your individual enrollment date in Wiser, on the right side of the home page under the heading “Enrollment Dates.”

Holds

Be sure to check your Wiser account to make sure that you do not have any holds which will prevent you from registering for classes. There is a designated HOLDS section within Wiser, on the top right corner of the home page once you sign in. If you have a hold, you need to contact the office associated with the hold to address the issue before you are allowed to register for classes.

*The Emergency Contact Verification hold can be released through Wiser. Simply click the link on the bottom left corner of your Wiser home page that says “Emergency Contact”, and follow the prompts to confirm or edit your emergency contact information. The hold will be released immediately upon completing this process.

Registration Request Form

Wiser will often not recognize if you have met a pre-requisite by waiving a course. This is a typical occurrence, so when you receive an error that says “Pre-requisite not met,” simply fill out a registration request, located here: http://www.umb.edu/academics/cm/student_resources/cm_graduate_registration_request

We will process your registration request within 24-48 hours. This is the best and fastest way to go about registering for classes when you receive an error.

Registration Deadlines

Students who are not registered for at least one course by June 1, 2013 will be charged a late registration fee of $100.00 by the Registrar’s office. Changes can be made to your schedule until the end of the add/drop period, but you must initiate your registration prior to June 1 to avoid the late registration fee.

Independent Studies & Taking Courses Off-Campus

We want to make you aware of the procedures for taking classes off campus, or enrolling in an Independent Study:

How to Take Classes Off-Campus for Transfer to UMass Boston

Graduate students may transfer in a maximum of 6 credits toward their degree at UMass Boston. To ensure that classes are eligible to transfer, students who wish to take classes off-campus must have the course approved by the Graduate Programs Office prior to enrolling.

The steps for taking a class off-campus are as follows:

  1. Identify the class you are interested in taking off-campus, and provide the Graduate Programs Office with a detailed course description of the class. Verify that you meet the other institution’s eligibility requirements. For course offerings through the UMass system, visit www.umassonline.net.
  2. Our office will contact you to let you know whether the course will be able to transfer in toward your UMass Boston degree.
  3. If the course is approved, you will then need to register for the class through the institution where it is being offered.
  4. After you have received your grade for the class, submit an official transcript to our office to have the transfer credit posted to your transcript.

How to Enroll in an Independent Study

An Independent Study is a course of study that you would arrange with a professor, to conduct research in a specified field. Students are responsible for selecting and contacting professors with whom they would like to work on an Independent Study.

It is a good idea to identify more than one professor with whom you would like to work, in case certain professors are not available. Students should be working with tenured or tenure-track faculty on an Independent Study.

Once a professor has agreed to conduct an Independent Study, you will need to fill out the Independent Study Form and have it approved and signed by the professor (you can find the form here).  Keep a copy of this form!

Once the Independent Study Form has been approved by the professor, bring a copy of it to the Graduate Programs Office (McCormack 5th Floor) and we will register you for the Independent Study course. This course will appear on your WISER account as one of the following: MBAAF 696, MBAMGT 696, MBAMS696, MBAMKT696, or MSIS 696.

Independent Studies are subject to the same registration and add/drop deadlines as all other courses at UMass Boston.
