UMass Boston’s MakerSpace
The MakerSpace is a shared lab located on the third floor of the Science Building (room 34), where UMass Boston students, faculty and staff can create, collaborate, design, and freely exchange ideas and expertise. Shared 3D printers and other technology and tools are available in the space as well as a knowledgeable lab monitor to help you get started.
Benefits of a MakerSpace
The MakerSpace provides a hands-on learning environment where makers practice the process of Design Thinking from ideation to testing. The process of creation gives makers a chance to learn prototyping which develops critical thinking skills, patiences and boosts self-confidence. The MakerSpace fosters entrepreneurship and the democratization of design and fabrication.
Tools and Technology Available
The open-access self-service lab contains six 3D printers: two Cubes, a Cube Pro, two MakerBot Replicators, and one Ultimaker. The lab is also in the process of adding one 3D hand-held scanner, a soldering station and a vinyl cutting station. The lab has computers – one iMac and five Dell Optiplex – with the software to create and edit designs, as well as prep the designs for 3D printing.
Using the MakerSpace
Faculty from all disciplines, artists, researchers, and STEM subjects are encouraged to have students visit the lab and begin making and innovating. Over the coming months we hope to add additional resources and services that faculty, students, staff and community members can use, such as a Laser Cutter for creating models and a plotter to create posters, decals, and signs.
MakerSpace staff provides resources and one-on-one consults to faculty interested in integrating 3D printing into their curriculum. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to set up an appointment.

The UMB MakerSpace Story
On the third floor of the science building is a laboratory that houses five 3D printers of varying models. Computers line the exterior walls, all equipped with three-dimensional digital rendering software. This is MakerSpace, an innovative 3D printing lab that opened in the Fall of 2016.
