Chasing Unicorns

Running the Boston Marathon to Support Camp Shriver

About “Chasing Unicorns”

The Chasing Unicorns blog is one way that Camp Shriver communicates to our Team about Camp Shriver programming, marathon training, fundraising tips and more!

The title, Chasing Unicorns,  is a nod to the B.A.A. logo. We feel that Chasing Unicorns captures the spirit of Camp Shriver–an inclusive sports camp for kids with and without disabilities who make friends, some for the very first time–and the experience of running the Boston Marathon, which for many is the pursuit of  a once-in-a-life-time dream.

The primary bloggers on the site will be Barbara and Steve Gildea (yes, we’re married!). Barbara is the Assistant Director of Community Programs for the Center for Social Development at UMass Boston, the research institute that hosts Camp Shriver. She leads fundraising and communications for Camp Shriver and will be the Marathon Team Coordinator.

Steve has run many marathons including the Marine Core Marathon and the Chicago Marathon, and is a three-time Boston Marathon finisher with a PR of 2:59:59. In addition to his personal accomplishments, Steve has coached high school cross country and track & field as well as working with Marathon Sports for the past three years. Steve will be providing weekly training tips, motivational pieces and his own unique brand of humor.

Additionally Team Camp Shriver will be joining with a coalition of other Boston Marathon charities for group training and weekly runs with head coach Rick Muhr. More information to follow.

For questions, please contact Barbara Gildea at barbara(dot)gildea(at)umb.edu or at (617)287-7247.
